June 1944

Long since, you wedded Minnesota’s fairest daughter,
And settled by Ohio’s turbid water,
And occupied one-half the House of Shaw -
And multiplied, which is Dame Nature’s Law.

Time flowed on, and flowed Ohio to old ocean,
Ohio water was your bitterest potion;
The years were kind, left not a single scar;
And life was good above the P.R.R.

(A pleasant spot far from the world’s alarms
Excepting those induced by Harry Charms).
Your tribe increased, and bulged the House of Shaw -
“We simply have to have more room!” says Ma.

You’ve now forsworn the lowlanders’ delights,
And scaled Ben Avon’s dizzy heights;
An eminence Olympian, with a Doric order
Is noted here and now by your recorder.

Blessings on your house, and door, and jamb!
Salutations, Sire! and erstwhile Emsworth Dam!
