Stones

Nine stones my daughter I have brought
All flat and square and suitable for paving
And she will lay them in her garden plot
To satisfy an ancient mystic craving
To touch the earth and nurture all things growing
And watch creation’s ebb and fruitful flowing
She didn’t ask for bread - I brought a stone -
For man, they say, can’t live by bread alone.
