I had a dream a while ago,
That the sweet chariot swung down low,
And carried me to the Golden Stair,
And old Saint Peter was sitting there,
In an old hand-me-down rocking chair,
Singing Hallelu, singing Hallelu, singing Halleluiah!
Saint Peter said, “Why howdy son!
There’s a ree-hearsal that’s just begun,
I’m glad to see you got my wire,
Reminding you to bring your lyre,
For we need instruments for the Choir!”
Singing Hallelu, singing Hallelu, singing Halleluiah!
I said, “Saint Peter please relate,
Why it’s so easy to crash the gate!”
Saint Peter said, “I’ll make it clear,
It’s mighty hard to get in here,
But the boys tell me you play by ear!”
Singing Hallelu, singing Hallelu, singing Halleluiah!
Then I said, “Please tell me Pete,
Will there be trouble at Judgement seat?”
Saint Peter said, “In that regard,
The Lord won’t make it very hard,
If you just show him your union card!”
Singing Hallelu, singing Hallelu, singing Halleluiah!
Saint Peter said, “I’ll tell the Choir
That we’ll just try you at second lyre,
We’ll fix you up a pair of wings,
An extra set of golden strings,
And we’ll have Gabriel show you things!”
Singing Hallelu, singing Hallelu, singing Halleluiah!
And there I was on Judgement morn,
Sitting by Gabriel with his horn,
And Gabriel said, “Just follow me
And don’t you worry about the key,
For we play everything right in C,”
Singing Hallelu, singing Hallelu, singing Halleluiah!
Then Gabriel began to blow,
And the sweet chariot swung down low,
And the Choir began to sing,
And the ones I love came on the wing,
And I woke up when I broke a string,
Singing Hallelu, singing Hallelu, singing Halleluiah!
