Eero W. Davidson was a member of the First Ballad Trio, a Pittsburgh
group which included
Vivien Richman and his son, Jo
Davidson. The Trio performed at National Folk
Festivals in St. Louis and recorded for the Voice of America.
Originally united by the common bond of making music for their own delight,
it was inevitable that the Trio joined Bob, Gretchen, and Jack Schmertz to
create the 1955 album, Robert Schmertz Sings His Songs. Eero started
collecting local themes and encouraged Bob to begin focusing on Pittsburgh
historical subjects.
For many years, a teacher of instrumental music, this ’cellist-singer-square dance caller arranged
all the songs on the 1959 Schmertz album, Sing oh! the City oh!. A chairman of the Folk Arts Leadership Committee and the founder of the
Callers’ Association of Western Pennsylvania, he worked in the field
of educational administration.
Mr. Davidson died in 1964. Set up in his name was the Eero W. Davidson
Award from the Pennsylvania Association for Educational Communications and
Technology for outstanding accomplishment by a member in the field of
communications in Pennsylvania.
